Keep The Gospel Simple

1 Apr

I  have a friend who really knows how to explain the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is so beautiful in its simplicity that a child can understand it and pass it on. 1 Corinthians 1:27  says: “But God uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty…”

My friend had come here from Mexico some years ago.  She wasn’t  yet born again, but she knew enough about Jesus, to know that when religious peddlers came to her door preaching a different gospel, they were not bringing the Truth. I marveled at how she had this child-like way of explaining who Jesus is and what he did on the cross. Nothing elaborate, no stumbling blocks, just the pure gospel with nothing added.

What preachers spend an hour explaining, my friend could condense it in 3 minutes and yet leave nothing out. Too many religious groups have added things to Christ’s gospel. Religious people and cultists adding works, rules, rituals and all kinds of ceremony. They add all these books and other materials and  pile them onto the Gospel till it becomes a heavy burden. Jesus told the pharisees who had all these ceremonial laws, regulations and prohibitions, that they were putting heavy loads on men’s shoulders.  Jesus’  Gospel has been buried so deep that many do not even know what He actually taught. So many people think they have to be worthy. They have to do things to earn something. So many dead works.  Jesus never said we have to be members of the Catholic church or the Mormon church. He said:  “Whosoever believes…” “whosoever will, may come…”  Anyone may come, just as we are.

When my friend opened her door one Saturday to find two Mormon sister missionaries standing there, she was surprised and a bit nervous. She thought: “who am I to converse with these women?” The sisters began to share some of the Mormon faith, gave her a copy of the Book of Mormon and left. After a couple of subsequent visits in which they were trying to convert her and get her baptized, my friend was troubled. Although she wasn’t saved, she knew enough scripture from years of Sunday school while a child, to know that what they were telling her was not scriptural. The devil is not Jesus’ brother! God did not father Jesus in the natural way that men father children! The Fall of Adam and Eve was not a good and necessary thing, but the result of sin! Jesus is very God, not another god apart from God the Father. There is a literal place called hell and fallen, disobedient men and women go there, not just the son of perdition.

A little Bible knowledge can go a long way.
