Are We Stealing from God?

14 Apr

I recently heard a man, who has the the gift of prophecy, say that America is under a curse. This nation is in dire financial straits. One of the reasons is because we are not faithful in our tithes and freewill offerings. There are many Christians who believe tithing is obsolete. That it ended when Jesus ushered in the New Covenant. However,  tithing came before any Mosaic law. Abraham, who was born long before Moses, tithed. The Law merely regulated tithing. Today we should give by faith out of a heart that is generous. In the New Testament, Christians  gave cheerfully and liberally. Personal sacrifice of their possessions meant little to them.  Since we could very well be living in the last days. how much more so should you be giving generously to the work of God?

What we are seeing in America is Christians habitually stealing from God . Malachi 3:8 says:  “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed me. But you say, How have we robbed you? In tithes and offerings.”

Too many of us fail to give of our first fruit for the building up of God’s kingdom. If we give at all, it’s usually whatever we have left after paying all our bills and spending on entertainment. Is this where our heart is? That God comes last?

Many Christians complain that they are so deep in debt that they cannot afford to tithe. Yet that makes absolutely no sense when we look at the promises of God. He says if we put Him first, He will see to it that our needs are all met (Matt.w 6:33)

I once heard a woman, who represents a lot of Christians, say this: “I am in so much debt I can’t see straight. My house payment is 2 months behind, my lights, cable and water are very close to being disconnected. I owe 5 payday loan places. Every time I think I might be able to get caught up one of my kids gets sick or my car breaks down and I get even deeper in debt. I’ve never had this experience before in my life and I am completely incapable of tithing.” Her last 6 words is her biggest problem. Her belief is that she cannot afford to tithe. She isn’t trusting God to provide. If she continues on this same merry-go-round she’s been riding on for a long time, she will never get out of debt and it will only get worse. She takes out loans in order to pay off old debts, only to incur new ones. The fact is, she cannot afford NOT to tithe. She has hit rock bottom and keeps digging herself deeper and deeper into a pit of which she can’t get out of. God has her not only at a financial crossroads, but one of testing, surrender and obedience. We suffer when we disobey God. We get in debt because of sin. Only obedience to God and surrender of every aspect of our lives can get us out of these ruts. God cannot take care of us if we are always trying to figure everything out and make decisions without him.

Albert Einstein once said that insanity is when we keep doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. God is asking us to surrender everything to Him. To stop trying to run our lives because we continually make a mess of it and then cry out to God when we are in trouble.

Tithing is the least of America’s problems 😦

I believe that if America was a strong Christian nation, faithful to God in what He requires of us, we would not be in the shape we are.
